SAN FRANCISCO – Saturday afternoon inside Kezar Pavilion, Academy of Art University volleyball stood up to defending Pacific West Conference champion Dixie State in each set, but ended up falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19). The day was not without numerous highlights as senior outside hitter
Melissa Brum made history by setting the program's new career kills and points records early on.
Dixie State pushed a 9-3 lead out of the gate yet the Urban Knights mounted a 5-2 comeback that featured
Brum's historic moment at 11-8 DSU. The kill broke Dan Yang's long-standing record (1313 kills) and further solidified Brum as the all-time points leader which had come two kills into the match. That momentum would continue, bringing ART U to within a single point at 15-14 and 16-15, but the Trailblazers used a 6-2 run to close the set on top 25-19.

Two kills by junior middle blocker
Margaret Winkler and three from Brum helped Academy of Art establish a 9-5 lead to open the second set, but a 6-3 rebuttal from Dixie tied things up 12-12. The teams then traded runs and found themselves tied four more times down the stretch. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker
Safua Elisaia downed back-to-back kills to put the Knights up 22-20, however, five consecutive Trailblazer points swung the momentum once and for all to DSU 25-22.

Eight ties through the first 26 points of the third set evidenced the back-and-forth nature prior to the teams' 13-13 deadlock. From there, Dixie State used a 6-2 push to gain separation and despite one more kill apiece from Winkler and Brum, the visitors held on to win 25-19, earning the sweep.
The Urban Knights are now 6-15 overall and 4-8 in conference play. Brum's team-high 13 kills in the match gave her 1,325 in her career as she pushes the new program record to new heights. Winkler matched her career-high with 10 kills via a match-high .450 hitting percentage while freshman setter
Lilika Teu produced her eighth double-double in the form of 33 assists and 12 digs.
Dixie State moves to 13-8 on the year and 9-4 in PacWest. The Trailblazers were led by a double-double from Delayne Daniel who finished with 12 kills and 15 digs.
Academy of Art heads to Southern California next week for a three-part trip featuring Azusa Pacific (Nov. 2), California Baptist (Nov. 3), and Point Loma (Nov. 5).
