KNIGHT WATCH
15002Entering the week ranked 20th in NCAA Division II in blocks per set, junior middle blocker Margaret Winkler is second in the PacWest with an average of 1.16 rejections per set. This past Monday, senior outside hitter Melissa Brum became the first Urban Knight in program history to register 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs after nine digs were combined with a season-high 23 kills. She remains the team leader in points per set (3.59) with 3.08 of those coming via the kill. Freshman setter Lilika Teu has moved into the PacWest's top nine with 6.42 assists per set following a career-high 56 assists versus Dominican. Those came with a career-high 20 digs for her team-best seventh double-double this year. Redshirt sophomore defensive specialist Lyndsay Mlynar also finds herself among the conference's top nine with 4.21 digs per set.

DOUBLE-EDGED SWORDS
In a tale of two halves of the season thus far, Chaminade started 5-0 with a sweep of No. 14 Alaska Anchorage to open the year, but followed by going 2-8 including a 1-5 start to PacWest play. The Silverswords most recently dropped four consecutive matches on the mainland including a 3-2 thriller at Point Loma. Chaminade is led by Daisia LaBrie and her 3.78 points and 1.10 blocks per set (fourth in PacWest). In the past, ART U and CUH have met 12 times with the Knights holding an 8-4 advantage.

SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE
Academy of Art swept BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 28 to deliver the Seasiders their eighth consecutive loss, but BYUH proceeded to win its next two matches on the mainland. The Seasiders first handled Notre Dame de Namur 3-1 then prevailed 3-2 over Holy Names to set up their eight-match homestand. Sinamoni Tonga, who had a team-high 13 kills in the teams' first meeting, remains BYU-Hawaii's points per set leader (3.90) and ranks ninth in the conference in kills per set (3.37). The win earlier this season was ART U's first in 13 meetings with BYUH.

ATTACKING THE SHARKS
Hawaii Pacific went 3-2 in its first two weeks of action, dropped three of four in the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase, but has since won four of its past six matches. The Sharks needed five sets to defeat NDNU and Fresno Pacific, but swept Holy Names before dropping a 3-1 result to Dominican. HPU carries the AVCA National Player of the Week in Pomai Recca, who ranks third in the PacWest in kills per set (4.29), averaged 5.06 kills and 4.29 digs per set in the Sharks' most recent 3-1 week. Historically, the Sharks hold a 9-3 all-time advantage over the Knights.

KNIGHTS DROP 3-2 HEARTBREAKER TO PENGUINS
In a rematch of the team's Sept. 17 matchup, Academy of Art and Dominican took the volleyball court once more on Oct. 3, but this time inside Kezar Pavilion. The contest went deep into the night as five sets were needed to determine a victor and, when all was said and done, the Penguins just barely came out on top 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 31-33, 25-16, 15-13). Brum led all players with a season-high 23 kills and Teu posted a career-high of 56 assists, but Dominican shifted the momentum in the fourth set and benefited from a crucial two-point swing in the final frame.

LOOKING AHEAD
When Academy of Art returns from Hawaii, two home matches against Bay Area PacWest opponents await. The first will be Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 15 followed by Holy Names on Oct. 20.
