Concordia Sweeps Academy of Art

SAN FRANCISCO – Up against one of the toughest Pacific West Conference opponents in Concordia, Academy of Art University Volleyball had a large crowd on its side, but ended up falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-14) Saturday evening inside Kezar Pavilion.

ART U held multiple leads in the early going in the first set, it was a 9-1 Eagles run that turned the tide. Trailing 24-15, however, the Urban Knights proceeded to fight off seven set points with multiple kills by redshirt freshman Ema Causevic and junior outside hitter Bailey Soolsma. The gap would be closed to 24-22, but ended up going CUI's way.

In the second set, ART U would post its highest number of kills (16) in its past 13 sets, getting put-aways from freshman setter Lilika Teu and senior outside hitter Melissa Brum during a 4-1 push to establish a 12-8 lead. A 5-0 run caught Concordia up before the visitors gained a 21-16 advantage. A quick 5-2 surge capped by junior middle blocker Margaret Winkler's kill brought the Knights to within two at 23-21, but the Eagles closed it out on top 25-21.

Carrying the momentum from set two into three, CUI went ahead 10-1, however, three tandem blocks helped Academy of Art rally 5-1 to within five points. Concordia capitalized on hitting errors down the stretch, rolling to a 25-14 set win and the match by way of a 5-0 run.

Now 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference, ART U got 10 kills from Brum and a double-double in the form of 26 assists and 13 digs from Teu. Winkler added seven block assists on the day.

Concordia improves to 12-1 overall this season and 2-1 in PacWest play with the victory. The Eagles were paced by a match-high 16 kills from Rachel Flynn.

Following a three-match week, Academy of Art looks ahead to one match in an eight-day span with BYU-Hawaii entering Kezar Pavilion on Wednesday, Sept. 28.
