ART U Edged By Point Loma on Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO – Before Saturday's match against the Sea Lions, friends and family gathered to celebrate the storied careers of ART U women's soccer's six seniors. Flowers, photos, and hugs were in abundance during the pregame festivities, but once the whistle blew, it was time to get down to business.

In the first half which featured all six seniors in the starting lineup, the Urban Knights were aggressive from the start, controlling a good portion of the possession. Senior midfielder Laney Haviland took ART U's first shot in the 10th-minute and Academy of Art's defense was solid as well, holding the Sea Lions to seven shots in the period. Nonetheless, Point Loma managed to break through in the 40th-minute, coming off of a succession of three shots: after the Knights saved and blocked the first two, Point Loma's Jae Kamanu was able to place a shot over senior goalkeeper Maggie Alikpala-Wilson's hands to give the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, the Urban Knights continued to play aggressively on both sides of the ball and the back line sustained their stingy mentality, denying each of PLNU's eight attempts at the net. Perhaps the Knights' best chance of the half came in the 90th-minute when freshman midfielder Sydney Cooke sent in a corner kick and later took a shot which sailed wide as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Despite the 1-0 loss, Academy of Art held their own against the Sea Lions who finish the season tied for fifth in the PacWest. The Urban Knights fall to 1-15-1 overall and 1-11-1 in conference with one more match to play. The contest will take place on Sunday, November 5, at Noon versus Concordia to make up for a cancelled match between the two earlier this season.
