ART U Falls in Golden Gate Classic Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – In the finale of the 2017 Golden Gate Classic, Academy of Art squared off with cross-town rival SF State. Despite a strong ART U defense having only allowed a total of two goals over the season's first pair of matches, the Urban Knights could not withstand an early SF State offensive-surge, eventually falling 5-0.

The first two Gator goals were, indeed, just a few moments after the opening whistle. The first score took place five and a half minutes into the period with the second following 10 minutes later. Ranier Plantinos netted the first goal, his fourth of the tournament after finishing Friday's contest with a hat trick against Holy Names. Plantinos was also named the tournament's MVP. The Knights' back line held strong for the following 16 minutes, but SF State broke through once again in the 32nd-minute to score their third goal of the half.

In the second period, ART U rattled off five shots for a total of nine in the game, but they could not match a pair of goals scored by the Gators. The Urban Knights had a solid offensive-sequence late in the period, however. In the 79th-minute, freshman midfielder Jaret Gil took a corner kick which resulted in a blocked-shot by sophomore midfielder Isiah Quiros. After the ball ricocheted out of bounds, Quiros proceeded to take two more back-to-back corners, but each time, ART U's attempts at the net were denied. The Novato, Calif. native ended the match with a team-leading, three shots and is currently Academy of Art's season-leader in goals (1), shots (11), and shots on-goal (4). Quiros is also one of just three players to have played in every minute this season. The others include:  junior defender Connor Henrichs and senior back Dominic Payerchin. Henrichs was also the only ART U player to be named to the 2017 Golden Gate Classic All-Tournament team. The full team can be found below:
