IRVINE, Calif. -- Academy of Art took on a tough Concordia team that went out to an early lead and held it in Monday's 5-0 loss.
"All five goals come against low numbers retreating," said coach
Matt Martin. "Kudos to Concordia for managing us on both sides of the ball and really timing their pressing movements."
A quick goal off the foot of Connor Gordon in the sixth minute put the Urban Knights in an early hole. In the first half the Eagles took 12 shots including eight on goal resulting in six saves by sophomore goalkeeper
Kris Jensson.
Senior midfielderÂ
Isiah Quiros had a solid opportunity in the 44th minute, dribbling past a defender to find space for a shot on goal but it was handled by the Eagle's keeper. Immediately thereafter CUI launched a counterattack and Elijah Amadin buried their second goal of the game.
The Urban Knights had another opportunity ten seconds before the first half expired when junior midfielder
Adrian Cekala was awarded a free kick 33 yards out. Cekala launched a dangerous ball, but it strayed just left of the goal and ART U went into the half trailing 2-0.
The Eagles came screeching out of the gates in the second half with three goals in the first eight minutes. The Urban Knights did their best to reciprocate but could not find the back of the net between their eight shots forcing them to drop the match 5-0.
"We will learn from this and improve," said Martin. "I'm excited to get in the training pitch."
Cekala lead the Urban Knights with three shots, followed closely by Quiros with two. Jensson ended the match with a season high nine saves bolstering his saves total to a staggering 74. The Iceland native has now collected six or more saves in his last six games.
After the loss, Academy of Art drops to 2-11-2 overall and 1-6-1 in conference. The Urban Knights will return home for a three game stretch to conclude their season, starting with Hawaii Pacific Oct. 27th.
