Biola Bests Academy of Art In Season Finale

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Inside Chase Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Biola prevailed over Academy of Art volleyball 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-13) in both teams' regular season finale.

Contending with the Eagles on their Senior Day, ART U was not intimidated and came out on a 6-3 surge to start after a kill by junior opposite Kiersten Kerch got things started and senior setter Alana Lucas later dropped in her 78th career service ace. The momentum quickly shifted, however, with Biola proceeding to score 10 straight points and, though three kills came from sophomore outside hitter Ashley Pawlak and freshman outside hitter Celena Davison started a 3-0 run late, the end result was a 25-17 win for the home team.

The teams went back and forth to start the second set, but a 6-0 push grew BU's lead from 10-9 to 16-9 and, despite a pair of kills from redshirt senior outside hitter Safua Elisaia thereafter, the Eagles took a 25-12 victory following 9-1 close to the frame.

Though Biola got in front 8-2 to begin the third, kills by Kerch and sophomore middle blocker Sadie Emery sandwiched another service ace from Lucas to keep it close. Elisaia and Pawlak went back-to-back with their kills during a 3-0 run, but after the teams traded points, BU took nine of the final 10 points for a 25-13 win and the match.

ART U, who finishes its 2018 campaign 1-29 overall and 1-21 in conference play, was led by six kills and four digs from Pawlak while Lucas added 10 assists to end her career with 1,011 and serve as the fourth Urban Knight to ever reach quadruple digits. Elisaia's three blocks led her to finish with the career record (316) and freshman middle blocker Jillian Wheaton, who wound up just shy of the program's single-season record for attack percentage, had the sixth-most blocks in a single-season with 93.

Heading to the National Christian College Athletics Association National Championship (NCCAA) next, Biola completes its regular season at 25-6 on the year and 19-3 in PacWest play. Christina DenBoer provided a team-high nine kills and Sierra Bauder added eight blocks in addition to seven kills.

"Our team played harder today, but we just couldn't sustain that for the complete match," said head coach Allen McCreary. "Biola is a very strong team great players it's what we are building towards."
