SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art volleyball made a run late in the third set against Concordia in Pacific West Conference action, but the Eagles would come away victorious 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22) over the Urban Knights in their first appearance inside Kezar Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
ART U established a 9-4 advantage out of the gate with multiple kills from sophomore outside hitter
Ashley Pawlak and sophomore middle blocker
Sadie Emery along with a pair of service aces from the hand of senior setter
Alana Lucas. CUI, however, worked its way back, rattling off eight straight points to move ahead 15-10. An ace by redshirt senior middle blocker
Safua Elisaia brought the Knights to within two at 18-16, but a 7-0 run earned the Eagles a 25-16 win.
After Academy of Art found itself up 3-0 at the start of the second set, an unfortunate momentum shift had Concordia in front 10-3 thereafter. Freshman middle blocker
Jillian Wheaton's kill cut the margin to 17-12, but that was as close as ART U would get because CUI won eight of the next 11 points for the 25-15 victory.
Opening the third set ahead 8-1, the Eagles progressed to a 14-4 lead, but freshman outside hitter
Celena Davison provided energy off the bench for Academy of Art. She offered two kills during a 4-1 push then Pawlak's two kills bookended a 5-0 surge that forced Concordia to call timeout at 20-15. Another five unanswered points finished with Davison's season-high sixth kill of the match and her seventh made it just a 24-22 advantage for the visitors, but CUI ended up taking the match with a 25-22 final set score.
Academy of Art moves to 0-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play this season. A season-best 12 kills came from Pawlak and freshman setter
Picabo Reinhold's 24 assists marked her eighth three-set match with 20+ assists.
The win elevates Concordia to 4-8 on the year and 3-1 in PacWest action. Patience O'Neal finished with nine kills to lead the Eagles.
ART U next remains local, but travels to Belmont for a Sept. 21 pairing with Notre Dame de Namur before returning to Kezar Pavilion to host Fresno Pacific on Sept. 22.
