LA MIRADA, Calif. – Inside Chase Gymnasium to start its third of four Southern California roadtrips this season, Academy of Art volleyball dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) decision to Biola in the Pacific West Conference action on Friday night.
Though the Eagles started strong with a 5-2 lead out of the gate, ART U got a kill from junior middle blocker
Carly Evetts and soon had the score tied 5-5. A 7-0 push by BU ensued shortly thereafter, but after Evetts and junior middle blocker/opposite
Sadie Emery combined on a block, the Urban Knights rattled off four straight and trailed only by five at 20-15. The teams would trade short rallies the rest of the way as Biola claimed the first set 25-18.
Jumping in front 8-2 to start the second frame, BU traded scores with Academy of Art before extending its lead with a 9-1 run. Faced with their opponent's set point, ART U responded by scoring five straight including two service aces from junior libero
Michaela Charrette, but the Eagles' margin was too great as they gained a two-set advantage with the 25-15 result.
After going up 12-3 in the third set, Biola soon found itself ahead 17-7, but a quick 3-0 run highlighted by a solo block from sophomore middle blocker
Jillian Wheaton brought it back to single digits. BU, however, would score six of the next seven points and eventually completed the sweep with a 25-13 final set score.
ART U moves to 6-12 on the year and 4-7 in PacWest play. Emery paced the Urban Knights with six kills while the trio of Evetts, junior outside hitter
Mariana Figueroa Ferriera and junior outside hitter
Ashley Pawlak turned in four kills apiece. Sophomore setter
Picabo Reinhold collected 15 assists and junior libero
Catharina Brant Bambirra finished with six digs.
Rising to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in conference, Biola was led by Bekah Roth's match-high 13 kills plus nine from Abby Brewster.
In its second PacWest rematch in as many days, Academy of Art will face Concordia tomorrow at 3 p.m. inside the Eagles' CU Arena.
