Second Set Shift Sends Knights To Season Series Sweep

BELMONT, Calif. – In a Pacific West Conference rematch with Notre Dame de Namur inside Walter Gleason Gym, Academy of Art volleyball went on an 11-3 run to bounce back in the second set and ultimately go on to win 3-1 (19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-19) on Wednesday night. Junior middle blocker Carly Evetts and junior middle blocker/opposite Sadie Emery's double digit kills led the way.

After back-and-forth action early, the Argonauts used a 7-0 run to create initial separation and, despite a diverse offensive attack from the Urban Knights, NDNU found itself up 20-15 in the first set. The teams would exchange 3-0 pushes, but the home team ended up holding on for a 25-19 victory to start.

The second set was up for grabs until the aforementioned 11-3 burst took Academy of Art from up 11-8 to firmly in front 19-10. Evetts and sophomore outside hitter Celena Davison were featured in the shift with the former dropping two kills plus a block solo while the latter had a kill and a service ace. Down the stretch, ART U scored six of the final eight points including three straight en route to a 25-13 match-evening result.

Much like the second frame, the third saw a one-point Academy of Art margin expand to nine as two separate 4-0 surges came loaded with multiple kills from junior outside hitter Mariana Figueroa Ferriera and Emery. Notre Dame de Namur worked its way back to within five late, but two kills by sophomore middle blocker Jillian Wheaton in the final four points settled a 25-18 win for ART U.

20458Six unanswered points by the Knights early in the third set created a 10-5 advantage for the Urban Knights and three kills by Evetts denied any extended runs by NDNU who began to taste a comeback. From up 17-14, Academy of Art pulled away with a 6-1 burst that included back-to-back service aces from Figueroa Ferriera. In the end, an Argos service error ended the night with ART U 25-19 winners in the final set.

"We made some adjustments to our libero after the first set and were able to be more aggressive with our serving," said head coach Allen McCreary "I believe our serving has kept us in a lot of matches this season and when it is on we do a good job at keeping teams out of system."

Now with the most single-season victories since 2014, Academy of Art rises to 11-15 overall and 8-10 in PacWest matchups. Evetts hit .423 while amassing a match-high 14 kills plus two block solos. Emery contributed 11 kills and the tandem of Davison and Wheaton each had eight kills apiece. Davison's 10 digs were a season-high. A dig shy of her 18th double-double, sophomore setter Picabo Reinhold put up 44 assists and nine digs. The Urban Knights' 11 service aces were tied for their second-most this season with both Figueroa Ferriera and junior libero Pawlak offering three apiece to go with 14 and 12 digs respectively.

Though it was "Senior Night" for the Argonauts, NDNU relied on junior Samantha Shaffer and sophomore Kathlin Martinez to deliver 11 kills apiece. Notre Dame de Namur falls to 4-22 overall and 3-15 in conference.

Back in action tomorrow, Academy of Art is set to play its final home match of the 2019 season when the Urban Knights host Holy Names on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. inside Kezar Pavilion.
