Volleyball Sets Service Aces Record In 3-1 Loss To Swords

HONOLULU – In a rematch of the Pacific West Conference's top two teams in terms of service aces, Academy of Art volleyball evened things up two sets in, but Chaminade prevailed 3-1 (25-17, 10-25, 25-19, 25-18) inside McCabe Gymnasium on Thursday night. Nine ART U service aces on the night rose them above their previous single-season record (179) while junior outside hitter/libero Ashley Pawlak also tied the program's individual record for service aces in a season (42).

The Silverswords started the match hot and were quickly ahead 14-4 then 21-7, but the Urban Knights would not go without a fight. Academy of Art rattled off seven straight points including the two service aces that would get Pawlak to the single-season record. Soon junior middle blocker/opposite Sadie Emery delivered a block and a kill to cut the deficit to six, but CUH held on for the 25-17 win.

Bouncing back, set two featured a truly dominant performance by ART U. An initial 6-2 was pushed to 10-4 on three consecutive service aces by sophomore setter Picabo Reinhold and a kill by sophomore outside hitter Celena Davison then sparked 10-1 surge capped by back-to-back Davison putaways. The 17-4 run that made the difference eventually set up junior outside hitter Mariana Figueroa Ferriera to end the 25-10 result on a kill. Against a team that averages over 14 kills per set, it was the fewest points for Chaminade in a single set this season.

Both sides duked it out to start the third set as a two-point advantage was the largest up until a 14-14 tie. Along the way, Figueroa Ferriera had the honor of scoring the service ace that would break the Knights' single-season record. CUH managed to create separation with six in a row, taking a 2-1 lead on a 25-19 victory in the frame.

In a similar fashion as the third set, the teams were relatively even 20 points into the fourth, but a 9-2 Silverswords push got them into a more comfortable position. Despite multiple kills by junior middle blocker Carly Evetts down the stretch, Chaminade ended up winning the match on a 25-18 final in the fourth set.

With one match left to play, Academy of Art's overall record is now 12-17 and 9-12 in conference play. It was the second consecutive contest that saw Emery's 12 kills lead the way while Evetts contributed nine kills. The tandem combined for 10 blocks (Evetts with six, Emery with four). Reinhold finished with 28 assists and nine digs (one shy of her 19th double-double) and Figueroa Ferriera's 20 digs were a team-high.

Chaminade improves to 21-8 on the year while remaining top three in the PacWest standings at 15-6. Rachel Reedy paced the Silverswords with 11 kills, Annah Rivera added 10 kills, and Leka Kine-Falefa tallied a match-high 23 digs.

The Urban Knights' Hawaii roadtrip and 2019 season will both conclude this Saturday, Nov. 23 on The Big Island at UH Hilo.
