Season High Free Throws Shoots Knights Past Hawks

SAN FRANCISCO -- Academy of Art men's basketball took down cross-town rival Holy Names 77-71 on Sunday afternoon inside Kezar Pavilion to brighten the road to San Rafael.

The victory featured a strong ART U shooting performance from the line, shooting 80.6 percent and sinking a season high 29 free throws. ART U overwhelmed the Hawks down low and outscored HNU 42-16 inside the paint.

ART U struck first with a 3-pointer from senior guard Cobe Williams who had another impressive game. Williams made a season high 10 free throws on 10 opportunities and finished the game with 15 points, two assists, and a steal.

The teams were locked in a back and forth battle through the half, with each side answering every shot of the other. After trailing to the Hawks, ART U was finally able to regain its lead when a layup from senior forward Brenden Otero brought the score to 15-14. With 10:49 in the half junior guard Chance Maxwell soared through the air and finished a layup to give ART their biggest lead to that point at 21-16. In the later part of the half ART U gained offensive momentum and went on an 11-0 run. The run started with a successful trip to the line by C. Williams, which was followed by a layup from junior forward Andrija Blatancic.

Blatancic had another team leading scoring performance against the Hawks, finishing with 18 points, nine rebounds, and an assist. The Howard College transfer shot an impressive 7-12 from the field, and went a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

The run was capped off by back-to-back scores from sophomore guard Stefan Milivojevic, one of which was a deep ball from beyond the arc. Milivojevic had the third highest ART U scoring performance of the night with 13 points while shooting 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Urban Knights maintained control and went into the half leading 39-29.

ART U carried momentum into the second and quickly extended their lead to 50-36 with 14:10 left to play. The Hawks narrowed the advantage to seven, but ART U went on another run and took a 17 point lead, their largest of the game, with just over five minutes left. HNU made one last push with the minutes dwindling down and narrowed the lead to single digits with just two minutes left to play, but ART U's lead was too much to makeup, and the Urban Knights were victories 77-71.

With the win, Academy of Art improves to 9-15 overall and 9-10 in conference, half a game back from UH Hilo in the six spot. ART U will play their final home game of the season against Notre Dame de Namur Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
