ART U Battles Western Oregon to Double OT for Tie

SAN FRANCISCO – After a week of away matches Academy of Art returned to scenic Paul Goode Field on Monday morning to take on Western Oregon. It was a back and forth match and the Wolves scored first, but the Urban Knights battled back and after two overtime periods the match ended in a 2-2 tie.

WOU was on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute from Alyssa Tomasini, who ripped a shot from just outside the left side of the penalty box into the top of the net to put the Wolves up 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, ART U equalized on sophomore forward Brooklyn Morera's header. The ball was lobbed in perfectly on a corner kick from junior midfielder Sydney Cooke, who played it over the Wolves' defense to the far post, allowing sophomore midfielder Baylie Christensen to head the ball to the other side of the goal box. Morera was placed perfectly and dipped her head to knock the ball to the top of the net and tie the match at one.

In the 39th minute WOU went ahead once again. Jacky Beristain crashed the box on a corner kick that was barely out of reach of a leaping Knights' head. The ball deflected off her body and quickly ricocheted to the bottom left corner to put the Wolves up 2-1 at the half.

10 minutes into the second half, the Urban Knights equalized once again on freshman defender Katie Williams' first goal of her career. Cooke earned her second assist of the day on the play with another immaculate lob right outside the goal box. Williams battled a pair of Wolves defenders and managed to volley the ball past the reaching goalie.

Neither team could manage to find the net for the remainder of the half so the match went into overtime. A well defended overtime, both teams were held to just a single shot, although both of them were extremely opportune and came on back-to-back plays.

After Cooke almost collected her third assist on another corner, the Wolves quickly launched a counterattack. All of ART U was behind the ball from pushing forward on the corner kick, except one. The Wolves had one defender to beat for an open shot at goal, but sophomore defender Britney Flint stepped up, won the ball, and cleared out what would have certainly been the game winning goal for WOU.

ART U's record moves to 3-1-1 following the tie with the Wolves. The Urban Knights will now look ahead to Wednesday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Rocklin, Calif. to face William Jessup.
