OAKLAND, Calif. – A stellar starting pitching effort was the undoing of the Academy of Art baseball team on Monday, as Hawai'i Pacific took down ART U in a Pacific West Conference contest, 5-0.
The Urban Knights (4-13, 0-1 PacWest) couldn't defend home field in their first PacWest game of the season, as they were shut out by the Sharks (7-9, 3-6 PacWest) thanks to a complete game shutout by Cole Mayeshiro. HPU struck for a run in each the top of the first and second, and Mayeshiro never looked back, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts and one walk on 109 pitches.
Each of the first two runs for the Sharks scored on RBI groundouts, with the first coming from Jason Bannister after the first two batters of the game singled. A double from Jake Selco would start the second frame before he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Nicholas Jio to pick up the RBI.
ART U junior starter
Cannon Secrist would settle down after the initial going and get the game into the eighth inning with the score still 2-0, but it was then that the Sharks doubled their lead on a two-run dinger to left field from Joe Gallagher. Secrist would exit the game with a final line of four runs on nine hits with six hits and one walk in 7.1 innings pitched.
The final run of the game would score on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth after a pair of walks started the inning.
Four Urban Knights collected hits on the day, including junior
Noah Daubin who was 1-for-3, extending his current hitting streak to eight games, tied for the longest such streak for ART U this season. He has also reached base in nine consecutive contests. Also going 1-for-3 was senior
Thomas Delgadillo, and juniors
Austin LaBarber and
Dominic Chavarria, with Delgadillo also stealing a base, his fourth of the season.
Gallaher led the way at the dish going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Coffey was 2-for-5 with a double and a run. Kyle Layugan also collected a multi-hit game by going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
ART U will look to rebound tomorrow when they host games two and three of the series in a twin bill beginning at 2 and 5 p.m. from Laney College.
