Concordia Outlasts ART U In PacWest Quarterfinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – There were four matches that went into tie-breaking third sets during a quarterfinal battle between No. 24 Academy of Art women's tennis and their opponent No. 18 Concordia, but ultimately it would be the Eagles that would walk away victorious by a final of 4-0.

After winning their opening round matchup yesterday against No. 10 seed Colorado Mesa, the No. 7 seed Urban Knights (5-5) would come up short in their quest to upend the No. 2 seeded Eagles (14-3). It was a quick start to the match for Concordia, who captured the first two doubles matches on courts two and three to take the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead.

Much like they were yesterday, ART U was unbothered by dropping the doubles point, as four out of the six singles matches were close battles that would last into three sets. Of those four, three would remain unfinished, as sophomore Yun "Nicole" Shiau was in front of Camila Tunosa on court three, fellow No. 47 sophomore Sofia Ragona was tied on court one with No. 36 Ghazal Pakbaten, and freshman Erica Hellbe was chasing a comeback effort on court five against Tiffany Carrillo.

Nicole ShiauAs those matches went into extra sets, the Eagles would captures singles wins on courts four and six, putting them just one point away from clinching. Then, the only tie-breaking set that was concluded was that of freshman Maria Vittoria Casucci on court two, who won her opening set but would ultimately be defeated by No. 44 Rebekah Anderson as Concordia would claim victory.

With the loss, the Urban Knights will move into the consolation bracket, where the third pairing of the season with No. 25 Fresno Pacific is set for 9 a.m. tomorrow back at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. The two teams have split the opening two games of the trilogy, with ART U having won the most recent matchup in the season finale, 4-3
