SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art men's soccer and Stanislaus State would remain scoreless through 90 minutes before Stan State ultimately found a game winner on their only shot of the golden-goal overtime period, squeaking away with the 1-0 win over ART U on Sunday evening.
Chances were abundant in the weekend battle as the Urban Knights (0-3-0) sent eight shots toward the net, with four of those shots making their way on goal. ART U junior goalkeeper
Davis King registered a season-high five saves on 20 shots through regulation, often denying the Warriors (1-2-1) on chances in front of the net. However, it took just one shot during the 100th minute from Jorge Lara, assisted by Daniel Gomez, to find the net and send the home team away the victors.
Of the four Urban Knights chances in the first fame, two belonged to senior forward
Adrian Cekala, including a screaming shot that was aimed for the top left corner and required a diving save from Warriors keeper Sebastian Castellanos. Both keepers were on their game in the first half by posting three saves each.
The ART U pressure remained high in the second half, with Cekala just missing an open net after some nice passing offense from the Knights midway through the frame. Ten minutes later, Cekala was streaking down the field for a breakaway chance, but was denied by a Stan State sliding tackle from behind to clear the danger. Not through threatening for a goal, ART U had a final chance from junior midfielder
Breki Einarsson, but would see the shot to drift wide.
Cekala would get overtime started with another great look, putting an attempt on net while streaking down the left side just three minutes into the period. It would be the final chance for ART U, as the Warriors would eventually collect their goal on the rebound of a bouncing ball in the box after a free kick in the 100th minute to send the home crowd home happy.
Taking half of the ART U shots was Cekala, putting three of his chances on goal. Senior defender
Armando Rivera would end the match with a pair of shots of his own, one of which was on goal, while sophomore midfielder
William Mychaltchouk and junior midfielder
Breki Einarsson each added a shot.
The next chance for the Urban Knights will come on Sept. 16, as ART U will have their fall 2021 home opener beginning at 12:30 p.m. against Cal State Monterey Bay.
