Cekala Ties ART U Records In Loss To Otters

SAN FRANCISCO – Though Academy of Art men's soccer senior forward Adrian Cekala was able to tie both the ART U career points and goals records on a penalty kick, the Knights could not walk away victorious in their home opener, falling to Cal State Monterey Bay by a final of 5-1.

The record-tying goal would come in the 52nd second minute and leveled the match at 1-1 for the Urban Knights (0-4-0), as ART U was looking to respond from an early ninth minute goal by the Otters (3-0-1) and Antonio Ordoñez. For Cekala it was the 16th goal of his career, tying him with Grimur Grimsson for the most in program history, while also marking 37th point of his career, again placing him in a tie but with Kristof Urbanyi. Getting the goal was a result of the pressure that Academy of Art had been generating throughout the first half, leading the shot battle by a 6-3 margin despite the fact that CSUMB held a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the very next minute following the equalizer, the Otters pulled back in front on the second goal of the match from Ordoñez, who he cleaned up the rebound in front of the net after a cross from CSUMB. It was then that the match momentum would shift, as Cal State Monterey Bay would strike again in the 60th minute, then close out the match with another pair of quick goals in the 75th and 79th minutes.

Cekala would end the match leading the Knights in shots with three, putting two on net including the goal, sophomore midfielder Gilly Miller in addition to the two first-half looks from junior midfielder/forward Breki Einarsson

ART U will look to rebound under the lights on Sunday night when they take on Chico State at 6 p.m. on the road.
