SAN FRANCISCO – For the second time this season Academy of Art women's soccer was able to generate five shots during a match, doing so in Thursday's Pacific West Conference battle against Biola, but it was not enough to equal the trio of goals scored by BU at the end of the first half as they the claimed victory, 4-0.
Coming up big for the Urban Knights (0-11-0, 0-4-0 PacWest) throughout the first half was freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Calderon, as she was called upon often to keep the match tied against an aggressive Eagles (2-6-1, 1-1-0 PacWest) offense, and produced three saves including one where she denied an attempt on a breakaway by jumping to make the stop. Calderon also had luck on her side on one attempt, where the chance from BU hit the top of the goal frame before bouncing down and out leading to an ART U clearance.Â
It was only a matter of time before the pressure turned into a goal, as the Eagles took 15 shots throughout the first half with a trio finding the back of the net before the whistle in the 35th, 41st and 44th minutes, with Christine Maranville and Catrina Gonzalez making their way onto the stat sheet twice. Academy of Art did put a pair of chances on goal from a pair of defenders in senior
Britney Flint and junior
Raquel Calvo Mendez, but could not cut into the lead.
The Urban Knights kept pushing and manufactured three more shots in the second frame, but none made it on target. Meanwhile, Biola continued their attack with another seven shots, adding a fourth goal in the 61st minute when Maranville, who ended the match with a goal and two assists, scored from the top of the box.
For ART U, Caldaron has not failed to reach five saves in any match this season, hitting that mark once more against the Eagles. Senior midfielder
Reyna Valencia was the only Knight to take multiple shots, but only Flint and Calvo Mendez put their shots on goal.Â
Academy of Art will next take a quick detour from a PacWest play, as ART U hosts Lincoln University for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at noon.Â
