BELMONT, Calif. – In action at home for the second time in three days, Academy of Art volleyball saw all three of its sets versus Biola follow similar scripts as the Eagles made late runs to secure the 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-14) Pacific West Conference victory on Saturday night inside Walter Gleason Gym.
The Urban Knights faced an initial deficit in the first frame, trailing BU 13-6 before making a huge comeback. It began with graduate student
Maya McClellan scoring her second kill of the evening and continued with junior setter
Elly McInerney delivering three service aces to fuel seven unanswered points. Now tied 13-13, the teams traded scores until a one-point Eagles advantage at 20-19 became the 25-20 set result after Biola strung together five of the last six points.
Sophomore right side
Katherine Von Kraut sent down a kill for ART U's first score of the second set and she would add two more while Academy of Art battled back against an 11-7 margin for their opponent. Though McClellan connected for three more kills of her own in the later stages, the frame was secured by BU 25-13 after a 7-1 surge to end it.
Both sophomore middle blocker
Janaya Delone and freshman middle blocker/right side
Kaia Fittz provided a strong block early in the third set as their tandem defense resulted in several tie scores initially. A 7-2 Biola push was slowed by McClellan's kill and the scoreboard had the visitors up only two points at 14-12 after graduate student outside hitter
Amalie Rupertova swung for a pair of kills. The Knights, however, would face an uphill battle thereafter with the Eagles taking 11 of the final 13 points for a 25-14 win and the match.
Academy of Art moves to 4-15 overall and 3-7 in PacWest play after being led by 11 kills from McClellan. Von Kraut added six kills while McInerney filled up the stat sheet with 22 assists, seven digs, three service aces, and two block assists. Both Delone and Fittz contributed three block assists apiece and sophomore libero
Nina Garcia's 10 digs matched her career high.
Biola improves to 11-8 on the year and 8-4 against conference opponents. Anna Aubele's 19 kills paced the Eagles and were supported by 13 kills from Madison Beebe as well as 38 assists for Abby Brewster.
On the road for its next four matches, ART U begins with back-to-back PacWest rematches in Southern California against Point Loma (Oct. 14) and Concordia (Oct. 15).
