PacWest Weekly Awards (Feb. 28)
NCBWA Regional Weekly Awards (Mar. 1)
IRVINE, Calif. – Just two days after punching out an ART U record 16 batters during Academy of Art baseball's
walk-off 3-2 victory over No. 23 Concordia, right-handed senior
Collin Carriger continues to collect the accolades as he was named the Pacific West Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region Pitcher of the Week on Monday and Tuesday. The award is for games played from Feb. 21-27.
Starting the opener of a four-game series against the nationally-ranked Eagles, Carriger came out on fire
by carving through 10 CUI hitters in the first four frames, including fanning seven in a row to end the second before striking out the side in both the third and fourth. Dominant all game long in his first complete game of the season, Carriger would punch out at least two batters in six of the nine innings he tossed, including the seventh when he tied the
previous ART U record of 14 strikeouts that Carriger himself set last year on April 30, 2021 against this same Concordia squad. The final of those six innings would come in the top half of the ninth, as Carriger kept the Eagles off the board long enough for the Urban Knights to reward him with his first victory of 2022 on a walk-off sacrifice fly.
Though these are the first PacWest and NCBWA Regional Pitcher of the Week awards for Carriger in 2022, they are the second such awards of his career, also receiving both honors last season
on May 3, 2021 after his then-record-setting performance against CUI. Additionally, though it is the first Pitcher of the Week award for ART U this season, it is the second overall PacWest weekly award of the campaign, joining junior outfielder
Charles Morgan who was tabbed as the
PacWest Player of the Week on back on Feb. 21.
