KNIGHT WATCH

With the first weekend of PacWest play complete, Academy of Art ranks fourth in the conference in service aces per set (1.69) and comes off achieving the second-highest total in program history (14) against Concordia on
Sept. 10. In that contest, senior libero
Isaura Santos not only totaled a career-high six service aces (second-most in program history), but also broke the ART U single-match record with 39 digs, elevating her to now tied for third in the conference in digs per set (4.05).
One of just two teams with a pair of the conference's top 10 point-scorers, the Urban Knights have relied heavily upon graduate student outside hitters
Amalie Rupertova (3.23 points per set) and
Maya McClellan (3.10 points per set) who are sixth and seventh in that category. Rupertova is sixth in the PacWest in kills per set (2.87) and fresh off her third double-double of the year which featured a season-best 24 digs while McClellan boosted up to ninth in the conference in kills per set (2.74) after she erupted for 23 putaways (and a season-high 18 digs for her third double-double) against CUI most recently. With double-digit assists in 10 of her 11 matches played, junior setter
Elly McInerney ranks eighth in assists per set (5.11) with a pair of double-doubles thus far.
SURVEYING THE SILVERSWORDS
Coming into the week at 7-6 overall and 2-0 in PacWest play, Chaminade has won four consecutive matches, ending non-conference play by sweeping Seattle Pacific and Cal State Dominguez Hills before also sweeping Hawaii Pacific and UH Hilo. The Silverswords rank second in the PacWest in service aces per set (2.06) and third in hitting percentage (.194) with the tandem of Sophie Schilling (.267) and Sasha Colombo (.260) eighth and ninth in the conference. Meeting 21 times since 2008, Chaminade leads Academy of Art 13-8 historically.
SHARK-INFESTED WATERS
Following seven sweeps at their opponents' hands to start 2022, Hawaii Pacific won its first set in a 3-1 loss to UH Hilo most recently this past weekend. The Sharks, who are set to face Fresno Pacific on Sept. 16 prior to hosting ART U, are led by Riley Gill's 2.13 kills per set. After splitting their two matchups in 2021, HPU is ahead 17-5 all-time versus the Urban Knights.
A HILO HELLO
After a narrow 3-2 loss to SF State highlighted its non-conference season, UH Hilo split its first two PacWest matchups, defeating Hawaii Pacific 3-1 then falling to Chaminade 3-0. Several Vulcans can be found inside the conference's top 10 statistical categories including Tani Hoke (4.21 digs per set, second), Emerson Reinke (7.66 assists per set, third), and Nikki Logan (2.62 kills per set, 10th). The historical pairing of UH Hilo and ART U favors the former 15-4, but the teams split last season.
EXHILIRATING ART U COMEBACK ENDS UP JUST TWO POINTS SHORT
Facing a two-set deficit on
Sept. 10 back inside Walter Gleason Gym, Academy of Art volleyball resiliently fought all the way back to an eventual match point, but Concordia managed to rally for three scores to shift the result to their 3-2 (29-27, 25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14) Pacific West Conference win. Among a bevy of standout performances, senior libero
Isaura Santos'Â 39 digs broke the program's single-match record and graduate student outside hitter
Maya McClellan led all Urban Knights with 23 kills.
LOOKING AHEAD
Back on the mainland, ART U will have four days before one more road match at Fresno Pacific comes on Saturday, Sept. 24.
