TURLOCK, Calif. – Four members of Academy of Art women's basketball scored in double figures on Saturday afternoon back inside Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, but it was not enough as Cal State East Bay steadily separated late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to win both teams' final game of the Warrior Classic 81-69.
While the Pioneers began the contest up 6-2, a jumper by junior forward/center
Christy Ojide sparked what became eight unanswered points as senior guard
Ashana Hinds knocked down a triple and junior forward
Yasmine Sifaoui added a basket for the 10-6 ART U lead. Cal State East Bay countered with its own 8-0 run, but the margin was just a single point after freshman guard
Maddie Morrow knocked down a triple
A 6-0 CSEUB start to the second quarter was halted by the first of what would be three layups by freshman guard
Lucia Revenga over the next two minutes, bringing Academy of Art to within one again at 22-21. The Pioneers subsequently gained their largest lead of the game on a 13-0 run, but the half ended on an 8-2 burst by ART U that featured two 3-pointers from freshman guard
Anna Fornells.
From the 39-31 halftime score, the Knights were quickly within one after layups by Revenga, sophomore guard
Alba Rovira Ayuso, and Ojide helped power a 12-5 surge out of the break. Timely baskets by Cal State East Bay kept the lead before an 8-2 momentum shift toward the end of the quarter was slowed by Sifaoui's layup in the final 10 seconds.
Action continued to go back and forth in the fourth, but as the difference hovered around double figures, ART U soon found the game would shift to the foul line approaching the end of regulation. Both sides went 5-for-6 during a three-minute stretch and, though Rovira Ayuso combined with Morrow during a 7-2 run late, time ran out on the comeback and CSUEB prevailed 81-69.
The Urban Knights, now 1-3 on the year, were led by Revenga's 16 points plus three rebounds and two steals while Ojide logged her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Rovira Ayuso finished with 10 points and five rebounds and Sifaoui provided 10 points and five rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Morrow was named to the Warrior Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 11.0 points, 3.5 triples, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per contest in the two days.
Cal State East Bay improves to 2-2 this season with Payton Sterk's 20 points leading all players.
"While we are disappointed with the result today against a well-prepared Cal State East Bay team, the Warrior Classic has provided us with a benchmark for the season to date," said Head Coach
Jesse Clark. "As we prepare this week for our upcoming games our group has shown a collective ability to learn and grow from the experiences that we have had this weekend."
With its final of two season-opening non-conference tournaments now in its rear view, Academy of Art next matches up with Sonoma State on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. in Rohnert Park.
