Tennis Back In Win Column Triumphing Over CMU 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. – Academy of Art women's tennis was able to put an end to its three-match skid in convincing fashion against Colorado Mesa on Saturday, winning two of three doubles matches for the early point before taking five singles matches leading to a 6-1 victory over CMU.

Back above the .500 mark on the campaign, the Urban Knights (5-4) captured the early doubles point over the Mavericks (6-9) by winning each of the first two finished matches, with the duo of freshman Jessica Plazas and sophomore Erica Hellbe finishing first as they ousted Makenna Livingston and Halle Romero on court one, 6-3. Officially clinching the point was the team of sophomore Paulina Alvarez and junior Viktoria Leth on court three, as they took down the pair of Julianna Campos and Paige Furin, 6-4. While the second court was played to finish, it was Colorado Mesa that came out on top.

Colorado Mesa briefly tied the match after they won their point via player retirement on court two, but ART U got back to work when Leth produced a straight set win over Campos on court four, 6-3, 6-0. Following suit with a reversed score was Hellbe, as she secured a win on court five over Furin 6-0, 6-3. Earning the match-clinching point from the prime position with a thrilling tie-breaking victory was Plazas, as she responded well after dropping the opening set against Livingston by coming all the way back for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8.

Continuing to play the match until its finish, sophomore Julia Ortega joined the party with a victory over Macy Richards in identical 6-3, 6-3 sets on court three. Last but not least was Alvarez, who was the final of the ART U quartet to go 2-0 on the day thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win on court six over Kristen Thomas.

It is a very short turnaround for the Urban Knights, as they are back on the court at 9 a.m. tomorrow when they face off against MSU Denver.
