Doubles, Singles Wins Lead ART U To 5-2 Defeat Of DU

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art women's tennis made quick work of its opponent in its return to the court on Friday, taking two of three of doubles matches before then capturing four singles victories as ART U rolled past Pacific West Conference rival Dominican 5-2.

Beginning the day with doubles, the first Urban Knights' (6-4) duo to finish was the team of junior Viktoria Leth and sophomore Paulina Alvarez as they easily dispatched the Penguins' (4-7) pair of Astrid Criag and Haley Garcia on court three, 6-1. Officially clinching the point on court one was the tandem of sophomore Erica Hellbe and freshman Jessica Plazas, who ousted the team of Gina Dudley and Audrey Rafols 6-3, with the match on court two remaining unfinished.

Turning to singles action, Dominican earned its first point of the match via default with a win on court six, but the Urban Knights got back to work as they won each of the next four matches, all of which ended in straight sets. Capturing the first win was Leth on court three, as she put ART U back in front 2-1 in the match thanks to topping her opponent Carolina Guerrero, 6-1. 6-0. Following that was the top court where Plazas bounced Rafols, 6-0, 6-2. Scoring the official match-clinching point on court two was sophomore Julia Ortega, where she had little trouble against Dudley and pulled out the win 6-2, 6-1. Notching the last win for ART U on court five was Alvarez where she posted an identical set win over Craig, 6-2, 6-2. Playing until its finish, the Penguins captured the final win of the day on court four where despite winning her opening set, Hellbe went into a tie-breaking third set but came up just short, 6-2, 5-7, 7-10.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Urban Knights, as ART U returns to the court in just two days when they host Stanislaus State this Sunday at 4 p.m. from Bay Club SF Tennis.Â
