Academy of Art Hangs Tough, Falls To Jessup In Rematch

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Standing across from Jessup for the third time this season on Saturday, Academy of Art volleyball held leads midway through the second and third sets but could not hold on in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-22) win for the Warriors at home.

Five of the first seven points went to ART U with sophomore outside hitter Paola Divis recording back-to-back kills during the stretch, but an 8-1 response from Jessup shifted the score in their favor 12-7. Steady production from the home team led to a 25-15 victory to start.

Early offense by the Urban Knights got them up 7-3 in the second frame and soon 11-6 on another Divis put-away. Despite the Warriors 10-2 surge thereafter, ART U was down only by one at 20-19 on multiple kills from graduate student middle blocker/outside hitter Fina Tuinauvai. Graduate student middle blocker Chandra Reed and junior right side/middle blocker Katherine Von Kraut delivered kills to stave off three set points, but Jessup managed to escape on top 25-23.

The two sides exchanged points for much of the third set until Von Kraut authored both a kill and a block alongside Tuinauvai to help Academy of Art go up 12-8. The Warriors came back to make it 12-12 and threatened with another late push to assume a 23-19 advantage. Graduate student opposite Claire Ricard and Tuinauvai both had kills to keep the Knights close, but the home team once again held on, prevailing 25-22.

Academy of Art moves to 6-18 on the season and 5-11 in PacWest play with the day's results. Von Kraut finished with a team-high eight kills followed by Divis' seven kills, and six apiece from Reed and Tuinauvai. Senior setter Elly McInerney posted 29 assists and sophomore libero LC-Reece Nakagawa collected 13 digs.

Above .500 in conference play at 7-6 as well as 11-9 overall, Jessup had a trio with double-digit kills led by Taylor MacCuish's 13 while Kenzie Carpenter had her hands on 36 assists.

ART U now turns its attention to a Senior Night matchup with Dominican this Wednesday, Nov. 13 which begins at 6:30 p.m. inside Kezar Pavilion.
