Knights' Fifth Consecutive Win Sees Them Outlast CUI 4-3

DALY CITY, Calif. – Back at Bay Club South San Francisco for the second time in four days, Academy of Art women's tennis found itself watching the final singles match determine its home contest versus Concordia. The Urban Knights started off claiming the doubles point, and took the hard-fought win over CUI ending in a three-set battle in the fourth singles position to stand victorious 4-3.

ART U had the early momentum with their doubles point win, as the Knights came back to win the last two matches. Freshman Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe topped Sophie Rachor and Tiffany Carrillo, No. 10 nationally and first in the region, 6-4 on Court 1 to tie the doubles matches up 1-1 before ART U recorded the first point of the day for the squad after a sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean 6-4 victory on Court 2.

Singles action favored the Knights early with Plazas yielding just two games to Carillo in a 6-2, 6-0 win at the second position, but the match soon shifted with CUI taking wins on Court 3, 6, and 5 in that order to take the lead for the moment. Supulniece tied it back up for the Knights as she defeated Rachor 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 on Court 1 and Najean cleaned it up for ART U in the last match that finished of the day on Court 4, beating Jessica Bear of the Golden Eagles 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to secure the fifth-straight victory for the Knights, taking this one 4-3.

The Urban Knights will next hit the road as the homestand has concluded, with their next match being against Hawaii Pacific with Azusa Pacific following thereafter, both in Azusa, Calif. at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex going down on Mar. 10-11.
