ART U Ends Road Trip After Tough Battle With No. 35 APU

AZUSA, Calif. -- No. 30 Academy of Art women's tennis matched up against the Cougars after competing at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex for the second day in a row, and although the Urban Knights found some early success in singles, No. 35 Azusa Pacific ultimately took the match 5-2 on Monday.

In doubles action, the duo of junior Erica Hellbe and freshman Amelija Supulniece, ranked 40th nationally, recorded a huge win over APU's No. 8 team of Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor. The doubles victory for the Knights in this match tied up the score in doubles overall 1-1 on the day, but the Cougars would clinch the point on Court 2 shortly after to take an early lead.

Sophomore Jessica Plazas came out victorious in the first concluded singles match of the afternoon, taking down Vini Bautista 6-4, 6-0 to tie the day up at 1-1. While APU won the next two singles matches including a close contest that involved Supulniece, No. 55 nationally, and Kane, No. 75 nationally, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the Cougars' favor, senior Viktoria Leth would respond with a victory on Court 5 over Katherine Nguyen 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. After APU would take another match on Court 4, junior No. 60 Maria Vittoria Casucci would force a third set on Court 2 against Julia Jordan, No. 9 regionally, but APU would take this one as well with a 2-6, 6-3, 5-7 score.

After the match, Academy of Art moves to 5-3 overall while Azusa Pacific is now 10-1. The Urban Knights will be back at home at Bay Club South San Francisco this Saturday, Mar. 16 to take on Westmont, starting at 3 p.m.
