ART U Finishes Historic Season In Elite Eight Versus UNG

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – In the second NCAA Division II Elite Eight match in program history, No. 28 Academy of Art women's tennis was squared up against No. 3 North Georgia, and it was the Nighthawks who would move on to the Final Four after taking down the Urban Knights 4-0.

Jessica Plazas & Estelle NajeanThe Knights were on a 13-match streak winning the doubles point, but UNG took it this time as they came out victorious on Court 1 and 3 following a two-hour rain delay at Sanlando Park. No. 22 nationally ranked doubles duo freshman Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe were squared up with the No. 49 ranked doubles pairing of Johanna Lippert and Viktorie Wojcikova while junior Paulina Alvarez and senior Viktoria Leth battled against Valentina Ascarrunz and Carolina Reis. Sophomore Jessica Plazas and freshman Estelle Najean were up 5-4 on Court 2 over Angelina Linnikova and Svetlana Teterina, but the match would be tallied down as unfinished.

In singles, the Nighthawks would win in straight sets on Court 1, 3, and 4 to help finalize the score for themselves at 4-0. While No. 71 in singles Plazas, Leth, and Alvarez all took a set on their opponents, the matches were halted as unfinished due to the UNG clinch.

With the Knights only ever making it to the Elite Eight one time prior in 2018, the squad has a lot to be proud about as they finished the season with a 16-6 record, tied the longest winning streak in program history with their win over UIndy in the first round of the NCAA DII National Championship Tournament, recorded a West Regional victory against No. 46 Concordia, and won the Pacific West Conference Championship for the first time in program history.
