Women's Tennis Boosts Past UIndy 4-1 In Sweet Sixteen

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Squared up with No. 29 UIndy, the #6 seed, in the squad's first match of the NCAA Division II National Championship, No. 28 Academy of Art women's tennis, the #11 seed, pulled off the first upset of the tournament as the Urban Knights tied the program record with their ninth consecutive victory, defeating the Greyhounds 4-1 to push themselves into the Elite Eight.

The Knights started the tournament off by taking the early 1-0 lead over the Greyhounds through doubles play. In dominant fashion, junior Paulina Alvarez and senior Viktoria Leth quickly secured the first match on Court 3 with a 6-0 score. After UIndy tied up the doubles matches with a win on Court 2, the No. 22 nationally ranked doubles duo of PacWest Freshman of the Year Amelija Supulniece and junior Erica Hellbe took the tiebreaker on Court 1 to give the Knights an early lead after their 7-6 (7-5) triumph.

Over on the singles courts, No. 71 nationally ranked singles sophomore and ITA West Region Player to Watch Jessica Plazas started off the action with a 6-0, 6-0 masterclass over Maissane Aik on Court 2, putting Plazas into a tie for the second-most singles wins in a single season (18) by an Urban Knight to date. No. 22 nationally ranked singles Supulniece finished soon after to put the Knights up 3-0 after she defeated Tyffaine Pais, No. 58 nationally in singles, with a 6-3, 6-2 score. After Maria Fiacan got a point back for the Greyhounds, junior Maria Vittoria Casucci clinched the match for the Knights as she defeated Benedetta Sensi 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on Court 3.

Maria Vittoria CasucciThe victory over No. 29 UIndy (#6 seed) makes it the highest-seeded win in the tournament for the Urban Knights in program history, as Concordia (N.Y) was the No. 35 nationally ranked team in the country and the #9 seed in 2018 at the time of ART U's first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

The Knights will next face off No. 3 North Georgia (#3 seed) in the Semifinal match tomorrow with first serve being tossed at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET).
