ART U Home Opener Ends In Scoreless Draw With MSUD

SAN FRANCISCO -- In a match with 14 total shots combined at the net between Academy of Art men's soccer and MSU Denver, both goalkeepers had a plethora of action but no scores came to fruition for either squad to finalize the game as a scoreless draw on Saturday in the Urban Knights' debut match at SF Glens at Treasure Island Field.

With the advantage in the first half with the wind at their back, the Roadrunners took the first five shots of the contest. ART U redshirt freshman goalkeeper Florian Grollmann showed poise, as he came away with three saves in that time, all in the matter of just 20 seconds. Academy of Art would take two shots on target in the last five minutes of the opening frame, but Nick McNeil of MSUD saved two shots of his own to ward off the danger.

Both teams did not allow too much action around their nets in the second half, as the ball stayed within the midfield for the majority of the frame. Just five of the 14 total shots would come in the latter part of the match, with four coming from the Roadrunners. Grollmann continued to show he would not let anything through, as he came out of the match with five total saves to push himself into first place within the Pacific West Conference in saves per game (5.5). Freshman midfielder Andrea Mercanti took a strong strike in the 74th minute for ART U, but it would veer just off of the target.

The Knights' record now moves to 0-1-1 while the Roadrunners are now 1-2-1. ART U returns to the pitch next week in San Antonio as they'll take on St Mary's (Tex.) on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. CT.
