Tennis Pulls Off Comeback, Bests Westmont 4-3 At Home

LIVERMORE, Calif. – Academy of Art women's tennis pulled off the come-from-behind victory at The Club at Livermore on Saturday, clinching the day from a sophomore Estelle Najean singles point to beat out Westmont 4-3.

Picking up a triumph with just six regular season matches to go and jumping into that ninth spot in the Pacific West Conference standings, the 3-5 Urban Knights managed to squeak out the win after initially starting the afternoon down a score. Forfeiting the Court 6 singles point prior to the contest, ART U tied the match up at 1-1 after being victorious on both doubles courts they competed on. Needing to win both for the doubles point, the Knights saw sophomore Amelija Supulniece and Najean overcome Lauren Gee and Johanna Winkler of Westmont 6-3, while sophomore Georgiana Parr and freshman Stefani Georgieva clinched the point over Sophia Ostovany and Justie Spitzer with a 6-4 score.

Now tied up, singles began in favor of the 4-10 Warriors, taking the lead after a win on Court 5, but No. 10 Supulniece made quick work of Ostovany on Court 1 with a 6-0, 6-1 score to tie the day back up at 2-2. Not seeing another deficit, ART U sprung out to the lead for the first time with Georgieva's 6-4, 6-3 win over Winkler on Court 3, while No. 51 Najean pulled off a miraculous comeback, dominating the last two sets as she closed it out for the squad on Court 2, taking down Gee 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 on Court 4.

ART U will be back out on their home courts early next week, taking on Chaminade at The Club at Livermore on Tuesday, Mar. 18, beginning at 10 a.m.
