Marcus Young

Marcus Young enters his third season as the Urban Knights' head women's volleyball coach in 2010.

For the second consecutive year, Young helped guide the Urban Knights to a winning season with an 18-15 overall record in 2009. In the inaugural 2008 campaign, Young coached Academy of Art to an impressive 17-12 overall record.

Young comes to Academy of Art University with coaching experience at club, high school, and collegiate levels, including NCAA Division I. His collegiate coaching career began as an assistant coach at Mt. Olive College in 1995. From there, he moved on to East Carolina University where he served as an assistant coach and then acting head coach for the Pirates from 1996-99. During his tenure at East Carolina, Young was involved in all aspects of the volleyball program, with his main focus as recruiting coordinator.

In 2000, Young returned to California to coach the girl's varsity team at St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda. From 2000-05, his teams compiled a 120-67 record, averaging 20 wins per season. Young led his team to a Bay Shore Athletic League Championship and twice to the semifinal round of the North Coast Section playoffs.

Most recently, Young spent one season as head coach of the University of Texas-Brownsville women's volleyball program. The Scorpions compiled a 36-9 record in the 2007 season; the university's second season competing as a four-year institution. Young's team went undefeated in conference to win the Red River Athletic Conference championship. The Scorpions also went undefeated in the NAIA Region VI Tournament to move onto the NAIA National Championships where they eventually reached the quarterfinals. Young's team finished tied for fifth place at the NAIA National Championships. Young was named Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and AVCA/NAIA Region VI Coach of the Year during his season with the University of Texas-Brownsville. His players also received honors for their successful 2007 campaign. Five players were named to the All-Conference Team. Middle blocker Talita Milasauskas and setter Daianarah Bracero earned NAIA All-America honors and outside hitter Katie Japp was a scholastic All-American.

Including his first two seasons with the Urban Knights, Young's overall career head coaching record stands at 74-43 (.633).

Young has also been heavily involved with club volleyball, USA Volleyball, and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Recognized as one of the top volleyball talent evaluators in the country, Young is a member of both the Boys and Girls Junior Olympic All Tournament Committees. In the past, he served as the High School Boys Volleyball All American Northern California representative for AVCA.

A Bay Area native, Young graduated from St. Mary's College in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration. He earned his master's of education in Exercise and Sport Science from East Carolina University in 1996.
