Women's Volleyball Tops Dominican

The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team beat the visiting Dominican Penguins tonight in 4 games, 25-20,20-25,25-18,25-16. The Urban Knights improve to 11-5 on the year with the victory.

Despite their modest record, the Penguins gave the Urban Knights all they could handle throughout the evening. The Urban Knights, who were coming off back to back losses, started the first set strong jumping out to an early 8-1 lead. The Penguins, however, finished the set on a 10-3 run.

The Penguins started the second set the same way they finished the first. The game was tied at 4 a piece until Dominican started to distance themselves. The Knights were able to keep the game within 4 points for most of the match, but were never able to take the lead, losing the set 25-20. The third and fourth sets were all Urban Knights, winning both 25-18, and 25-16.

Coach Marcus Young highlights defense as the key to their victory tonight "Our defense really stepped up when we needed it" Three Knights finished with double digit digs, Olivia White (10), Dan Yang (10), and Alex Leja (12) while the team posted 12 blocks on the night.

Dan Yang had 12 kills to lead the Knights, while KaUwila Lavea and Levalasi Key each added 7 and 8 kills respectively.  Olivia White and Alexandra Leja dished out a combined 26 assists.

For the Penguins Lorel Grande finished with 10 kills while Gabby Pecora chipped in with 9, Brooke Swingle had a match high 18 assists and Mercedes Smith had 15 digs.

The Urban Knights will face the Dixie State Rebels in back to back games tomorrow evening at 7pm and again on Saturday afternoon.
