AAU Wins 5th Straight

Box Score

TURLOCK, CA—
The Academy of Art University may be a first-year program, but the Urban Knights have the personnel to compete as the visitors rallied from behind to defeat host Cal State Stanislaus, 25-21, 17-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-8, Wednesday night.

Despite having five players with at least eight kills — and three in double-digits — the Urban Knights defeated the warriors in 5 sets.

Lady Warrior, Jen Gee, led all players with 16 kills, and a season-best .367 attacking percentage, while Lianne Vicchio added 15 kills and 12 digs.

The Urban Knights were able to capitalize on mistakes made by their opponent, taking advantage of CSUS's tallied 21 service errors to AAU's nine.

The Urban Knights came out strong in the first set winning a back and forth battle, 25-21. But the Warriors fired right back appearing to be ready to take three straight for a victory. The Warriors were strong in sets two and three,  defeating the Urban Knights with efficient offense. Despite 6 service errors in set 2 the CSUS women were able rally together and capitalize on the unforced errors AAU made, winning the set 25-17.

In the third set CSUS jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with 4 kills and an Ace and never looked back. The Urban Knights would get to within 3 points cutting the lead to 15-12 but  that was as close as the set would get as CSUS went on to win 25-13.

AAU (8-3), however, picked up its blocking game late and behind the play of its two hitters, Dan Yang and KaUwila Lavea, rallied for the five-set win.

Academy of Art, which started all of its sports programs this past summer, was led by Dan Yang with 12 kills. Lavea added 10 kills and Levalasi Key had eight total blocks. Both Yang and Lavea each had three kills in the decisive fifth.

The Urban Knights take on Mills College Sept 19 at 7pm and will play Cal State Stanislaus again at home Sept 23 at 7pm
