San Francisco, Calif. -- In its final home match of the season, the Academy of Art University men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Dominican University at Boxer Stadium. The Knights battled through another scoreless first half and outshot DUC 12-6 overall, but they allowed two goals midway through the second to take the loss. AAU falls to 4-10-1 and 1-8 in Pacific West Conference play while the Penguins move to 6-7-1 and 3-4-1 in conference.
Academy of Art came out looking sharp and attempted seven shots compared to just two by Dominican in the opening period. However, the Knights had just two shots on goal in the half and neither team was able to score.
In the second half, Dominican forward Shane Huiberts converted a goal in the 56th minute to break the tie and later in the 75th minute, he found the back of the net for the second time when he headed a ball over Academy of Art University's freshman goalkeeper Ian Sutherland who came forward to block the ball. The Penguins held on to the 2-0 advantage for the remainder of regulation and took the victory.
On AAU's side, freshman forward Daniel Higa came off the bench to notch three shots (one on goal) and midfielder Richard Luna also had three shot attempts. Defender Elijah Craig added two shots (one on goal) and in the final home match of his career, senior midfielder Jaime Patino-Calvo recorded two shots (one on goal).
For Dominican, Huiberts was credited with both goals out of his three shots and the assists went to midfielders Thomas Clinch and Pedro Guevara. DUC played a physical match with 12 of its 19 fouls coming in the second half compared to 10 total fouls for the AAU.
Next up for the Academy of Art University is a nine-day break before they travel to Hawaii for meetings with BYU-Hawaii (Oct. 26) and Chaminade (Oct. 28) for the second time this season in addition to a matchup with University of Hawaii – Hilo (Oct. 30).
