Laie, HI -- The Academy of Art University men's soccer team came back from a two-goal deficit, but wound up losing to Brigham Young University – Hawaii 3-2 in overtime. Sophomore midfielder Richard Martin and junior forward Mario Pineda each had one goal in the match and Pineda added one assist as well. The loss puts AAU at 4-11-1 overall and 1-9 in the Pacific West Conference while BYU-H improves to 6-8-1 overall and 5-5-1 in PacWest play.
The Seasiders outshot the Urban Knights in the opening period 14-3 and got both of their goals from forward Kamuela Kamoe. BYU-Hawaii took an early lead with Kamoe's goal in the 22nd minute which was an unassisted score that had rebounded off freshman goalkeeper Ian Sutherland. Soon after, Kamoe found the back of the net again after receiving a pass from defender Collin Walch in the 32nd minute.
AAU headed into halftime down 2-0, but five minutes into the second half, Pineda took an assist from senior midfielder Jaime Patino-Calvo and headed the ball in from six feet out. Although the Knights still trailed, Mario Pineda turned into the distributor on Academy of Art's second goal when Martin was able to score in the 72nd minute to tie the match 2-2.
The remaining 18 minutes of regulation and the first two minutes of overtime saw no goals as both teams tightened up their respective defenses. However, in a surprising turn of events, Seasider forward Sam Akinaka managed to steal the ball from Sutherland in the 92nd minute and put away an unassisted goal for the victory.
In the rematch, Academy of Art University had strong performances from Pineda and Martin who combined for four shots with their only two shots on goal resulting in scores for AAU. Patino-Calvo added an assist as well and Sutherland finished with a season-high eight saves in 92 minutes played.
The Seasiders finished with 27 shots as a team in the contest with Akinaka's seven shots leading the squad. Kamoe had the two goals with four shots on goal and goalkeeper Cory Cosgrave only tallied one save before allowing the two goals.
After one day off, the Urban Knights will face Chaminade University on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at St. Louis Field in Honolulu, HI. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM HST (3:00 PM PST).
