St. George, UT -- At Hansen Stadium on Thursday evening, the Academy of Art University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Dixie State College. AAU tried to catch up after falling behind 2-0 in the first half, but the visitors could not get on the scoreboard. The Urban Knights are now 4-14-1 overall, 1-12 in Pacific West Conference play. Dixie State moves to 6-9-1 overall and 4-8 in conference.
In the 35th minute, Dixie State midfielder Josh Hernandez scored the match's first goal off a breakaway following a pass in the center of the box. The Red Storm would add to their lead just over a minute later when midfielder Brent Knoblauch put a ball past freshman goalie Ian Sutherland from 20 yards out in centerfield.
Although AAU had defeated Dixie State 3-0 back on Sept. 28, the Knights now found themselves down 2-0 at halftime with one shot attempt in the period. Academy of Art could not find salvation in the second half as Red Storm midfielder Francisco Arellano scored off a pass from Hernandez in the 62nd minute. From that point forward, sophomore midfielder Richard Martin tried to get AAU on the board by attempting two shots though he was unsuccessful.
Overall, Martin had the best offensive performance for Academy of Art University with his one shot on goal out of two attempts. Junior midfielder Manuel Padilla and freshman forward Petur Kristinsson each had one shot in the match. Sutherland did allow three goals in his full 90 minutes of action, but he also registered a total of seven saves.
The Red Storm were led by Hernandez who finished with both a goal and an assist. Arellano, who had a match-high four shots, also had one of the three DSC goals. Forward Kevin Young contributed an assist for Dixie State as well. Goalkeeper Tyler McAninch earned the shutout with one save in his 90 minutes.
Men's soccer now heads to Phoenix, AZ for its final match of the season. The Urban Knights take on Grand Canyon University on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the GCU Soccer Complex with kickoff set for 2:30 PM (1:30 PM PST).
