Women's Tennis Earns Victory Over Dixie State

Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (4/10/09) -- Facing Dixie State in the consolation bracket of the Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Academy of Art University defeated the Red Storm 6-3 at the Holua Resort at the Mauna Loa Village in Kailua-Kona, HI. The Urban Knights took all of the top four singles matches as well as the top two in doubles to improve to 6-10 on the season while DXC falls to 3-16.

In doubles action, sophomore Cassy Fabiani and freshman Paola Correa Fe teamed up to defeat Alexandria Bergen and Lauren Centralla 8-1 at #1. At #2, sophomore Laone "Lala" Botshoma and senior Anna Ritchie played a tough match against Ashley Lafeen and Brittny Rogers, but eventually took the victory 9-7. Then, in the #3 spot, Lauren Tarver and Annie Salmon won 8-3 over freshman Cecilia Hedin and freshman Maria "Belen" Tenorio of Academy of Art University.

Fabiani yielded just two games to Lafeen in #1 singles play and went on to sweep her opponent 6-2, 6-0. At #2, Botshoma had to fight through a close second set against Bergen and still prevailed 6-2, 7-5. Tenorio was slotted at #3 won 6-2, 6-2 versus Centrella while Correa Fe managed to defeat Rogers 6-4, 6-2 in the #4 position. Tarver did take a 6-4, 6-4 win from Ritchie at #5, but AAU had the overall match won.

Within the consolation bracket, the Urban Knights will face Grand Canyon in a battle for fifth place in the championship tournament at 3:00 PM this afternoon in Kailua-Kona, HI.
