ON THE ROAD FOR NEXT THREE MATCHES:
Urban Knights men's soccer first heads to
Angwin,
CA for a pairing with
Pacific Union College on Sept. 1. At the end of the week, AAU heads to
Nampa,
ID to play matches against
Northwest Nazarene University and
University of Mary on back-to-back days (Sept. 5-6).
OPENING KICKOFF:
Academy of Art University's match versus Pacific Union is set to begin at 4:30 PM tomorrow. On Saturday against NNU, the kickoff will be at 3:30 PM (2:30 PM PST) while Sunday's neutral site match between AAU and UM is set for 2:00 PM (1:00 PM PST).
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS:
Picked to finish sixth in the Cal Pac Conference,
Pacific Union College will open its season when it plays AAU on Tuesday. The Pioneers are coming off a 3-10-2 year in 2008 where they placed eighth overall. In the team's three victories last season, forward Bucky Voigt scored four goals while sophomore Edrei Mujares tallied three assists.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS:
In its first campaign since resurrecting its program, NNU finished with a 10-8-2 overall record and returns 11 players who started 14 or more games. Four of its returneers were all-stars – midfielders Alonso Avila and Brock Ogami as well as forwards Alex Magneac and Ben Mangeac. Avila was a first team GNAC all-star selection, while Alex Mangeac, who ranked third in the GNAC in scoring with 28 points (12 goals, 4 assists) and Ogami (4 goals,
assists) were second team selections. Of those four,
Avila is the only one to have scored a goal in the first two matches of this season.
SCOUTING THE MAURADERS:
University of
Mary defeated
Regis University and then lost to #21
Metro State to open up its 2009 season. Last year, under first year head coach Dave Cook, the Mauraders went 4-12-1 overall and it was midfielder Alex Calder led the team with four goals scored and two assists. In two matches this season, midfielder Nikola Nikolic has scored the team's only two goals and has taken a team-leading seven shots.
WILDCAT INVITATIONAL:
The Urban Knights captured their first win of the season, a 3-2 victory over CSUMB,
over the weekend after falling to Division I Chico State 2-0 in the
season opener. Against the Otters, junior forward
Frankie Diaz scored the Knights' first goal in the 11th minute while AAU sealed its victory off an unassisted goal by junior midfielder
Kyle Mannschreck. Sophomore midfielder
Richard Luna assisted two of the three goals. Sophomore midfielder
Richard Martin, freshman forward
Daniel Higa and
Luna made the All-Tournament Team. Also, for their impressive performances,
Luna and
Mannschreck were both selected for the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll.
MOVING FORWARD:
After completing five road matches to begin the season, AAU returns to
San Francisco on Sept. 15 for the team's first home match of the season against
Bethany University.
