Angwin, CA -- The Academy of Art University men's soccer team made history in its second win of the season, a 3-1 victory over Pacific Union College, as junior forward
Mario Pineda earned a hat trick by scoring all three Knights goals. Freshman forward
Daniel Higa and sophomore midfielder
Richard Martin, both fresh off their All-Tournament Team honors at the Wildcat Invitational, each assisted one of
Pineda's goals in a total team effort by AAU.
"I am very proud of Mario and all of our guys," Head Coach Daniel Rosaia said. "Rich Martin played a great game,
Elijah Craig definitely played hard, and the guys off the bench really picked up the team."
Pineda and the Urban Knights (2-1) found the back of the net in the first half when he managed an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute. Taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, Academy of Art University quickly built on that advantage when Higa found Pineda for a score in the 55th minute. Pineda would complete the hat trick just over a minute later when he got a second pass from Higa and netted a goal with 55:56 on the clock.
The Pioneers (0-1) avoided a shutout by scoring at the 89:25 mark when Brandon Voigt connected on a penalty kick by freshman Ian Sutherland, AAU's second goalie of the evening.
Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Waller started the game and needed just two saves to keep Pacific Union scoreless in the first half. Martin and junior forward Frankie Diaz combined for five total shots including four shots on goal.
In addition to the one goal by Voigt, the Pioneers' offense came in the form of Jonathan Groschel also had four shots (two on goal) while their defense, goalie Joshua Koot, managed 10 saves though he allowed three goals.
The Knights will now play two more road matches before they return for their home opener on Sept. 12 at Boxer Stadium.
