Seattle, Wash. --
At the Sundodger Invitational, the Academy of Art University men's cross country team finished 2nd as a team in the open division scoring with 119 points. Out of the eligible runners, sophomore Amos Maru captured first place overall in the men's open with a time of 24:52.34 and 6th place was awarded to sophomore Daveson Marindich (25:01.48). On the women's side, sophomore Denisse Correa crossed the line at 23:40.51 for a 55th place finish, but the Knights were unable to complete a full team finish after suffering another injury.

For Maru, he improved on his previous personal best by a full six seconds while Marindich achieved a new best as well. Behind Maru and Marindich, sophomore Simon Mutai completed the 8k race in 26:03.06, a three-second personal record besting last year, for a 31st place finish and sophomore Shawn Daut came in 36th with a time of 26:20.09. Sophomores Geoffrey Cheruiyot and Kennedy Kurgat followed in the 45th (26:33.30) and 66th (26:56.61) place slots respectively. As a team, the men took second place behind British Colombia's 89 total points, but bested Simon Fraser (139) and Northwest Nazarene (149).

"Everyone finished very strong," Head Coach Victor Hudson said. "Simon Mutai and Kennedy Kurgat are coming off injures and getting stronger."

For the Urban Knights' women's squad, Correa took 55th overall followed by junior Irinel Zamfir in 128th place with a time of 25:10.47. Freshman Stacey Toth finished the 5k race 190th overall in 27:29.35 and junior Monica Anguiano rounded out the Knights runners in the 199th slot with a time of 29:58.59. An injury to sophomore Monique Hernandez prevented Academy of Art University from being able to qualify for the team finish.

"The women did ok with our top finisher being Denisse Correa," Coach Hudson said. "Irinel Zamfir ran and finished her first race this season coming off an injury."

The teams stay local next weekend when they both will participate in Stanford University's Invitational meet on Sept. 26.
