San Francisco, Calif. -- Urban Knights men's soccer fell to Grand Canyon 2-1 in overtime at Boxer Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was Academy of Art University's fourth Pacific West Conference loss by one goal and drops AAU to 3-6-1 overall, 0-4 in conference play. Grand Canyon University improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-0 PacWest play.
The Antelopes and Knights battled through a scoreless opening period in which GCU notched six shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Waller kept AAU in the match with his five saves and the team added one. The teams went into halftime tied 0-0 and neither team would get on the scoreboard until midway through the second half.
The intensity rose in the second period as the teams combined for five yellow cards in a 20 minute span early on. In the 71st minute, freshman forward Brazer Bozlak broke the tie when he found the back Grand Canyon's goal off an assist by junior midfielder Kyle Mannschreck. The Antelopes came back with an unassisted goal from Nicholas Sykes in the 84th minute and the match headed into overtime as a result.
Forward Juan Mendez gave GCU the victory when he took an assist from forward Harvey Martinez in the 95th minute and scored the second goal on freshman goalie Ian Sutherland who faced seven shots in his combined time from the second half into overtime.
Academy of Art University had two shots apiece from junior forwards Frankie Diaz and Mario Pineda. Four Knights registered one shot on goal in the match.
GCU was led by three shots from Mendez, one of which was the goal, and four shots by forward Kyle Ciliento. In goal, Ben Paneccasio played the entire match, allowed one goal, and recorded three saves.
The Urban Knights will be in action again on Monday when they take on Dixie State College (2-2-1, 1-0 PacWest) at Crocker Amazon Park in San Francisco. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM following the women's soccer contest against the Red Storm.
