Cross Country Competes At USF Invitational

2009 San Francisco Invitational Women's Team & Individual Results

San Francisco, CA -- On Saturday, the Academy of Art University men's and women's cross country teams began their season with the San Francisco Invitational at Golden Gate Park. The men placed fifth overall in the 8k as sophomore Amos Maru taking third place (25:10.20) and sophomore Daveson Marindich finishing in the eighth slot (25:30.20) while the women's squad had one runner in the top 50 of a meet that included Division I competitors such as UC Berkeley, Santa Clara, and host USF.

Behind Maru and Marindich, sophomore Shawn Daut took 28th overall with a time of 26:31.80 and junior Geoffrey Cheruiyot came in 41st (27:35.20). Sophomore Mark Bretan rounded out AAU's top five with a 45th place result (28:07.00). The Urban Knights, who posted 125 points as a team in the meet, were just edged out of fourth place by Santa Clara (124).

On the men's team side, Cal (38) topped USF (39) by one point for the overall victory followed by San Jose State (90), Santa Clara (124), and Academy of Art University (125). Austin Ramos, who ran unattached, won the race in 24:55.30.

Sophomore Denisse Correa completed the women's 5k with a time of 20:25.80 to take 43rd overall. Following Correa, freshman Stacey Toth placed 69th (22:22.40), sophomore Monique Hernandez came in 87th (23:47.90), and junior Monica Anguiano finished 92nd (25:23.20).

USF scored 32 points and won the women's team event while Cal (36) came in second. UC Davis (84), Sacramento State (94), and Santa Clara (123) rounded out the top five. Cal's Kenna Kohl won the race in 18:20.30.

The Knights will be in action again on Sept. 19 for the Sundodger Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. Set to take place at Lincoln Park in Seattle, WA, the meet is in its 18th year.
