Hilo, HI – The men traveled to the big island to battle the University of Hawaii at Hilo in a single game on Friday afternoon. The weather was hot, but the Urban Knights seemed un-phased by it as they came out attacking, eager for another win. The Vulcans attacked first, taking an early lead in the first half. But the Knights battled back and forced the game into overtime. After a hard fought game, the Knights were able to put the game winning goal in the net in double overtime to defeat the Vulcans with a final score of 3-2.
Hilo wasted no time in the game as they scored their first goal just over five minutes into the game. They took advantage of the quiet ART U defense and scored their second goal less than 10 minutes later. After the second Hilo goal, the Academy of Art University stepped up their game and began to turn things around.
In the 29th minute of play, ART U put their first goal on the board to cut the lead in half. The goal was an unassisted foul shot from junior Richard Luna which got his team on the board. But the Urban Knights' offense was just getting started, and they went into halftime down by one.
The Knights came out attacking in the second half. They scored their second goal of the game in the 55th minute of play. This time it was a goal by freshman Patrick Heinemann who kicked it past the charging Hilo keeper off a cross by junior Andrew "Boomer" Cruz. This goal tied the game at two. After ART U's second goal, both teams upped their defense and their offenses were kept quiet through the end of regulation play.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game headed into double overtime. This would be the last chance for either team to record the win. In the 101st minute of play, the Knights' offense struck again, this time with the game winning goal. Junior Vilmundur Sveinsson shot the goal around the goalie, off an assist by Heinemann. After the third and final goal, the Knights defeated the Vulcans 3-2.
Sveinsson had a great game for the Urban Knights. He had four shots, three which were on goal, and the game winning goal in the game. Heinemann also did well recording two shots on goal, one goal, and one assist on the day. Luna stood out with two shots, including one on goal, and one goal in the match, and both junior Richard Martin and sophomore Brazer Bozlak each posted a shot on goal in the game.
ART U sophomore keeper Ian Sutherland had a great game for his team. He played all 101 minutes for the Knights allowing just two goals, while posting six saves. He also records the win in the game.
For the Vulcans, Christian Soto did well with two shots, including one on goal and one goal in the game. Robin Furuya also did well with two shots on goal, and one goal, and David Garcia had one shot on goal and one assist on the day.
