Box Score
San Francisco, CA – After inclement weather forced a field change, the Urban Knights battled La Sierra and were unable to make the comeback, falling 3-1. The non-conference men's soccer match saw its participants persevere through a cold afternoon at Kimbell Field with ART U outshooting the Golden Eagles 16-12. Freshman midfielder
Andrew Durano added his sixth assist of the season.
"The team gave a good effort today and really pushed hard in the second half," Head Coach Daniel Rosaia said. "Unfortunately we gave up that last goal late in the period, but our guys played very well."
Both teams earned opportunities to score in the opening period beginning with a shot off the right post by freshman forward
Patrick Heinemann in the 11th minute. As La Sierra surged with several shots midway through the half, sophomore goalkeeper
Ian Sutherland made a pair of strong saves while two other LSU chances were blocked by the Academy of Art University defense.
A thrilling three minutes ensued shortly before the first half concluded. First, LSU's Jose Moreno managed to score the match's first goal on a shot from 30 feet out in the 37th minute. The Golden Eagles then assumed a 2-0 advantage when Luis Escamilla scored inside the box just three seconds into the 40th minute. Despite the La Sierra goals, ART U quickly rebutted.
"Durano played great today," Coach Rosaia said. "He showed good resilience and played two positions in the same game which is not easy thing to do; switching your mindset like that. He just continues to impress me as a soccer player."
Heading into halftime down just 2-1, Academy of Art University played inspired soccer early in the second half to stay close. Although
Durano and freshman forward
Grimur Grimsson both offered shots in the first four minutes of the period, ART U just could not retie the match.
After a corner kick by
Durano in the 74th minute, junior forward
Andrew "Boomer" Cruz nearly scored, but his shot bounced off the cross bar and found junior midfielder
Richard Luna who put up an attempt that La Sierra's goalkeeper saved. The Urban Knights were pushing their offense as four more shots came in a two minute span before LSU came back with another goal in the 81st minute. From there, the Eagles would hold off ART U and take the match.
A team-high four shots (one on goal) came from
Heinemann while junior midfielder
Richard Martin had three shots (two on frame) off the bench.
Durano contributed his assist for a team-high six in 2010. In goal,
Sutherland turned in another complete 90 minute performance with two saves and three goals allowed. Freshman midfielder
Tyler Radcliffe, who started and finished with one shot on goal, also earned high praise from his coach.

"Our freshman
Tyler Radcliffe played a very good game as well," Coach Rosaia said. "He has been very coachable all year and he's a good addition to our program. The team put out great effort and it was some bad luck not finishing those chances. Our guys just dominated the second half and pushed hard. We will be working hard to prepare for our last conference games."
The Golden Eagles were led by two goals from Escamilla on the day. Moreno, who also added a goal in the contest, finished with a team-best four shots (two on goal). Assists came from Ruben Mendoza and Gan Luca Gibbons. Goalkeeper Gabriel Esqueda posted seven saves with one goal allowed.
Following an eight-day break, Academy of Art University men's soccer will return to Pacific West Conference action on Oct. 28 versus Grand Canyon. The Urban Knights and Antelopes will square off at Boxer Stadium in ART U's penultimate home game this season. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 PM.
