San Rafael, CA – The Urban Knights' 2010 drama continued Saturday afternoon at Forest Meadows Field as ART U men's soccer fought back in a 3-2 double overtime win against Dominican University. For the third time this year, freshman forward
Grimur Grimsson played the role of hero by scoring the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute off an assist from freshman forward
Patrick Heinemann.
"It was a great game," Head Coach Daniel Rosaia said. "Dominican is a good team and they are tough at home. It was back-and-forth throughout. In the first overtime, it was all them with our guys defending pretty hard. Then we scored to win in the second OT so that was fantastic."
The Penguins hosted their first "Kick Out Breast Cancer" event and came out of the gate looking to shoot in promotional pink jerseys. In the 15th minute, however, Academy of Art University had its first scoring opportunity when sophomore forward
Brazer Bozlak attempted a shot that ended up in the hands of DUC keeper Matthew Carlson. An early lead then came for Dominican when Alec Ziegler headed a pass from Pedro Guevara into the right corner of the ART U net in the 23rd minute.
As the first half concluded, both teams found themselves in a dogfight deadlocked 1-1.
In the second period, 20 scoreless minutes ticked off the clock before Dominican pushed across another lead. DUC's Yiorgo Letsos netted an unassisted goal in the 76th minute which appeared to give them the momentum to close out the game.
Dominican nearly pulled off the victory the first overtime period after a shot was saved by sophomore goalkeeper
Ian Sutherland in the 94th minute. The Penguins' Tim Pinella, who Academy of Art did not see in the teams' first meeting back on Oct. 7, launched a shot off the crossbar in the 95th minute, but the Knights hung tough and did not give in.
After substituting into the match late in the second half,
Grimsson attempted a shot in the 100th minute of the second overtime as a foreshadowing of what was to come. The match's dramatic finale came in the 102nd minute when
Grimsson entering the box for the goal off a setup from
Heinemann. Junior midfielder
Richard Martin worked with Heinemann passing back and forth before
Heinemann slotted it ahead to
Grimsson for the decisive ending.
Offensively,
Grimsson scored his fourth goal of the season (third game-winner). Both Urban Knights finished with two shots on goal apiece though junior forward
Andrew "Boomer" Cruz led the team with three shot attempts overall.
Sutherland finished off a complete game in goal with four saves and two goals allowed. The victory brings ART U to 6-10 overall and the Knights remain in the middle of the PacWest standings with a 5-7 record.
"Grimur has been coming up big," Coach Rosaia said. "Both Boomer Cruz and
Andrew Durano played really well today. The guys have really been stepping up and playing hard."
The Penguins received goals from Ziegler and Letsos with an assist by Guevara, but David Mendez paced the squad with five shots (three on frame). Defensively, Carlson took the loss in goal despite posting three saves and allowing three goals in 112:50 minutes played. The records for Dominican fall to 3-10-3 overall and 3-7-2 in PacWest play.
"It's a big win for us for sure," Coach Rosaia said. "There is definitely some confidence in our last two games and hopefully we can keep the roll going."
As the season approaches its end, the Urban Knights will play their final road match of 2010 on Thursday, Nov. 4 against PacWest rival Notre Dame de Namur. The Argos won a close 2-1 game in San Francisco back on Oct. 9 and the rematch comes at NDNU's Koret Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
