Angwin, CA -- Looking to gain momentum heading into the final two Pacific West Conference games next week, Urban Knights men's soccer scored early, often, and effectively shut down Pacific Union in a 4-0 win at PUC Soccer Field on Friday afternoon. For the second consecutive match, sophomore midfielder Patrick Heinemann, senior forward Andrew "Boomer" Cruz, and freshman defender Phillip Durner all recorded goals in the victory.

Philip Durner
“This was a good game today particularly coming off a tough loss,” head coach Daniel Rosaia said. “The team bounced back and scored four goals so I think it was important for the guys to get a victory before our last two games.”

After traveling just over an hour and a half north to Angwin, Academy of Art came ready to take care of business. By the 12th minute, the Knights had gotten on the scoreboard via an unassisted goal by Cruz. It remained a relatively close match for much of the first half, but in the 34th minute, ART U blew things wide open. Heinemann first found sophomore forward Leonardo Bartelle for his fourth goal of the season and then it was Bartelle who returned the favor, setting up Heinemann in the 36th minute.

The 3-0 score carried into halftime and a lock-down defensive effort had prevented even a single Pioneers shot on goal during the period. Bartelle was leading the way yet again in the 59th minute as he provided the assist for Durner's goal, increasing the Knights' advantage. While Academy of Art continued its attacks, junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland combined with several key ART U defenders such as sophomore Tyler Radcliffe to hold PUC scoreless throughout. A 4-0 victory went to the visitors in black and red in the end.

“Ian played a good game and I thought Phillip Durner and Tyler Radcliffe worked hard to help get the shutout as our center backs,” Coach Rosaia said. “Leo played well and had that second goal we scored. Everybody got to play today and it was a solid team effort. Everybody played hard and they got done what they were supposed to get done so it was just a good day for Urban Knights soccer.”

A goal and an assist Friday now put Heinemann just two points behind Cruz, his current teammate, for the all-time single season points record. The German midfielder has 15 points in all this year. Cruz and Durner each added goals while Bartelle logged a goal and two assists. Sutherland posted his second shutout of the season with just a single save necessary during his 90 minutes in goal. ART U moves to 5-10 overall and remain 3-7 in PacWest play.

“Boomer had a goal in this game and a goal in the last one too so he's really just a player doing everything right for us,” Coach Rosaia said. “He's been running up and down the field for us and is really having a strong finish to his athletic career.”

Pacific Union was led by Waigh Goda who had two shots and the Pioneers' lone attempt on frame. Goalkeeper Mina Michael, who played the second half only, posted three saves with one goal allowed.  Pacific Union is 1-11 overall this season.

“I feel like we're coming into to these final games pretty fired up,” Coach Rosaia said. “We'd like to end the season on a high note and are hoping to get support from the Urban Knight fans to cheer us on.”

Academy of Art bids adieu to non-conference play and now focuses on its two remaining PacWest matches of 2011. The Knights first welcome Dominican to Boxer Stadium on Friday, Nov. 4 then have their final game of the season and Senior Day come on Saturday, Nov. 6 at home against Hawaii-Hilo.
