San Francisco, CA -- A mere two days after Academy of Art men's soccer pulled off an incredible comeback victory at Notre Dame de Namur's Koret Field, the Argonauts were able to answer with a 1-0 win at Boxer Stadium. Similarly to the previous encounter, both teams fought through a lengthy scoreless stretch to open the match before a 60th minute NDNU goal. In the waning minutes, ART U had some of its best scoring opportunities, but the Urban Knights could not repeat their late-game heroics on this occasion.

"The boys played a great game," head coach Daniel Rosaia said. "The team has come a long way and is getting better every day."

The Argos offense came repeatedly in the first 15 minutes of Saturday's match. Academy of Art weathered the storm, however, by breaking up two corner kicks and then junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland made a spectacular save to stop a penalty kick following a foul.

Senior midfielder Richard Luna would have the first ART U shot on goal in the 15th minute, but it too was saved by the NDNU keeper. Shortly before halftime, junior midfielder Brazer Bozlak rocketed a shot from nearly 40 yards and almost found the back of the net except that it was wide to the right. The first half would conclude with neither team yet on the scoreboard and just the two total shots on frame.

A few more attempts by the visitors came early in the second period and then Frank Barnes had the lone goal which came on a progressive sequence by Notre Dame de Namur in the 60th minute. Arturo Gomez played a ball in the box to Armando Garcia who sent it to Barnes on the right side for the score. Now up 1-0 and in a place they knew all too well after Thursday, the Argonauts would look to add to the lead with several shots that ended up going wide.

Junior forward Grimur Grimsson and freshman forward Frederik Nagel, the Knights' two leading scorers, both played solid second halves and each had legitimate chances at the equalizer. Grimsson's came in the 65th minute when his header sailed wide and then Nagel put a very close one on frame in the 78th minute only to have it saved. The final 10 minutes of the match were all Academy of Art as the offense created several additional opportunities including a great attempt by Nagel in the 82nd minute. Unfortunately for ART U, the Argos held on for the 1-0 victory in the end.

Luna and Nagel each had the Knights' two shots on goal while senior defender Vilmundur Sveinsson led a strong effort in Academy of Art's backfield. Sveinsson worked hard to break up chances as ART U limited the Argos to just two shots on frame. Sutherland turned in another complete 90 minutes of action in goal with one save. Academy of Art falls to 3-7 overall, 2-4 versus Pacific West Conference opponents.

"Our boys understand that we are building a program and are making history," Coach Rosaia said. "They all are working hard to make the Academy of Art a formidable foe. I am proud of the guys for a great week of soccer."

The goal by Barnes of NDNU was his second of the season and assists went to Gomez as well as Garcia on the play. Goalkeeper Isiah Castro earned the shutout with two saves in 90 minutes. NDNU is now 6-5 overall, 2-3 in the PacWest.

Academy of Art meets Dominican (CA) for the first time this season in its next match on Oct. 15 in San Rafael, CA. The match will begin at 3:30 PM following the women's contest.
