KNIGHT WATCH
A stellar week for sophomore midfielder
Patrick Heinemann now has him just two points away from tying Cruz's record of 17 set last year. Heinemann, whose five assists rank him fifth in the PacWest, is also two assists away from the single-season record set by
Andrew Durano in 2010. Overall, the Urban Knights have four players who sport four goals or more at this point in the year, including Heinemann (5), sophomore forward
Leonardo Bartelle (4), junior forward
Grimur Grimsson (4), and freshman forward
Frederik Nagel (4). Junior goalkeeper
Ian Sutherland logged his second shutout of the season last week, moving him to rank sixth in that category in the PacWest. A stalwart in goal all season, Sutherland ranks sixth in the PacWest in saves per game (3.73), ninth in saves (41), eighth in goals against average (2.48), and ninth in save percentage (.603).
POUNDING THE PENGUINS
It was against Dominican some three weeks ago when Academy of Art set its new program scoring record in a 6-4 victory. Since that time, the Penguins have won once and gone into overtime on three occasions. Following a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Notre Dame de Namur on Oct. 18, DUC traveled to Humboldt State on Oct. 25 where the Penguins battled through 90 minutes of scoreless soccer before falling 1-0 in overtime. They wound up tying BYU-Hawaii 2-2 on Oct. 28 and then defeated Hawaii-Hilo 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 2. Nuri Bon-Acosta and Kolby Mitnik each have four goals and 10 points apiece to lead Dominican this season. David Mendez adds three assists. In goal, the duties have been shared between Erik Anderson and Casey Gibson with Anderson getting the most recent start against the Vulcans. He has 65 saves and 19 goals allowed in just under 780 minutes of work.
HAMMERING HAWAII-HILO
After winning their first match of the season, a 1-0 victory over Cornerstone, and defeating Chaminade 1-0 to start PacWest play, the Vulcans have endured a tough year. An eight-match losing streak came to an end on Oct. 26 when UHH tied Chaminade 1-1, but the Vulcans fell to Dominican 3-2 in overtime most recently on Nov. 2. Led by Raydan Bala, Josiah Motosue, and Lane Lorenzo who have each scored two goals, the Vulcans have combined for five assists on eight total goals this year. Defensively, the goalkeeping duties have been split between Paul Elias and Luis Romero with Elias taking the majority of time (780 minutes) though Romero started against the Penguins and posted six saves with three goals allowed.
THE CONFERENCE CHALLENGE
Head Coach Daniel Rosaia and the Academy of Art University men's soccer team play numerous elite teams in the PacWest Conference this season. Last season, the conference had three teams finish 10 or more conference victories including 2010 PacWest Champion Grand Canyon who was ranked #3 when the Knights faced them in the latter part of the year. As of the ninth NSCAA West Region poll, five different PacWest teams have been recognized at some point this year. GCU (#4), Hawaii Pacific (#8), Cal Baptist (#9), and Notre Dame de Namur (#10) are all currently among the Top 10.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Playing two matches in three days last week, the Urban Knights were narrowly defeated by BYU-Hawaii 4-3 on Wednesday, Oct. 26 and then triumphed 4-0 over Pacific Union on Friday, Oct. 28. An early 2-0 Seasider lead in the first match was erased by halftime after Nagel set up Heinemann for a goal in the 13th minute and then Cruz nailed a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. However, before halftime, ART U lost its captain, senior defender
Vilmundur Sveinsson, to a second yellow card and was forced to play the remaining 60 minutes down one man. BYUH would capitalize with the first goal of the second half, but a resilient Academy of Art squad responded via a goal from freshman defender
Phillip Durner off a corner kick by sophomore forward
Aron Ekberg. Now a 3-3 tie, the afternoon would see another Seasiders goal and this time the Knights could not come back, eventually falling 4-3. The loss was soon an afterthought, however, because ART U then unleashed its frustration in a 4-0 shutout of Pacific Union. Cruz, Heinemann, Durner all had repeat goals while Bartelle delivered a goal and two assists. The first goal, what would be the game-winner, came from Cruz in the 12th minute.
