Hilo, HI -- In the Urban Knights' final stop on their Hawaii roadtrip to end the 2012 season, a tough 5-1 loss came their way at the hands of UH Hilo on Saturday night. A one-goal difference at halftime, ART U got one back to make it a 3-1 score midway through the second half, but the Vulcans remained in control and pulled out the victory under the lights at UHH Baseball Field. Sophomore
Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson provided his third goal of the year in the match.
"The guys played their hearts out tonight and I am very proud of them," head coach Daniel Rosaia said. "We finished a rough season with a great attitude. The men's soccer team will continue to build and get stronger for sure. The foundation is strong and the future is bright."
The contest started off with the Vulcans scoring by way of a Xavier Fuerte goal off an assist by Aaron Sanchez in the third minute. ART U came right back on the offensive, however, as junior
Leonardo Bartelle had a header attempt that went just wide of the Hilo goal with a little over six minutes having gone by.
After senior goalkeeper
Ian Sutherland stopped a UHH header attempt, Bartelle then became the vehicle for the Knights' offense. He put shots on frame in the 21st minute and the 28th minute, but Vulcan goalkeeper Yonha Adrabi was there to save both. The teams would soon head into halftime with UH Hilo up 1-0.
Early in the second half, the Vulcans struck again as Philip Sakaba found Vincent Muscarella for a goal in the 53rd minute. UHH up 2-0 and looking for more, Muscarella had another chance in the 57th minute, but Sutherland denied him that one to keep his team within striking distance.
Hilo's Rayden Bala would get free for the third Hilo goal of the evening in the 73rd minute, but an Urban Knights response came swiftly. Sveinsson netted his goal on Bartelle's first assist this year to get ART U on the scoreboard. Now a 3-1 game, Hilo tried to remain in control and managed two more goals in the final minute to take a 5-1 victory.
Sutherland, ART U's all-time saves leader, posted six more on Saturday and finishes his senior season with 96 (the most of any of his four years at Academy of Art). It was also Sutherland 29th consecutive complete game, a streak which will likely go untouched for quite some time.
UH Hilo, who finishes its season with a 5-8-2 overall record and 5-7-2 in PacWest action, had three Vulcans with goals on the night. Fuerte and Muscarella each scored once while Bala had a hat trick and Sanchez and Sakaba provided assists. In goal, Adrabi totaled three saves and one goal allowed prior to being relieved by Luis Romero for the final 15 minutes.
The Urban Knights complete their 2012 campaign at 4-13-1 overall, 3-10-1 in conference play.
